Opening plans — PDFs, images, and zip sets
TakeoffQuote opens PDF plan sets (multi-page, several files at once), images (scans, screenshots, photos of a sheet), and whole .zip downloads straight off a bid platform. Everything is read, rendered, and stored locally in your browser — nothing uploads. Press G for the sheet gallery to browse a set and open sheets as tabs or side by side.
What you can open
Drag onto the canvas, or click Open your plans on the empty screen:
- PDF plan sets — multi-page, multiple files at once.
- Images — scans, screenshots, photos of a sheet. They’re wrapped into PDF pages in your browser.
.zipplan sets — the whole download off a bid platform, unzipped in the browser; every PDF inside opens. A malformed archive fails cleanly instead of ballooning the tab.
Nothing uploads anywhere. The file is read locally, rendered locally, and stored locally — see Privacy & your data.
The sheet gallery (G)
Press G (or click Sheets in the toolbar) for the visual gallery: one card per sheet with its title-block sheet number, a thumbnail, and status badges — open if it’s already a tab, a shape count, and a scale status (scale ✓ green, plan: 1/4″ = 1′-0″ amber when a scale note was detected but not yet adopted, no scale red).
- Open one sheet: point to a card and click View.
- Open several: click cards to select them — each gets a numbered badge, and that order is the left-to-right order. Then Open N as tabs or Open N side-by-side (side-by-side maxes at 4 sheets; one pan/zoom moves the whole row).
- Close a PDF: point to the file’s first card and click ✕. Takeoffs on its sheets are preserved and restore if you re-add the same file.
Tabs and multi-file sets
Open sheets ride a Sheets tab strip: click a tab to view it, ⊞ to put it side-by-side with the current sheet, ✕ to close the tab. The sheet chip’s dropdown lists every page of every open file. Each sheet keeps its own scale, takeoffs, and markups — a plan set is never one uniform scale, so this matters more than it sounds (Scales).
Moving around
Pan is never a mode you switch into: two-finger scroll pans, pinch or wheel zooms toward the cursor, and middle-drag, right-drag, or Space-drag pans with any tool armed. Past ~115% zoom the sheet re-renders straight from the PDF vectors, so fine callouts and hatching stay razor-sharp at any depth — and render quality never affects quantities.
